I followed the instructions of this link to install

The sed command mentioned in the link doesn’t seem to be necessary anymore. The line that it adds is already there.

Setting static IP address in Ubuntu 14.04

Here is a quick reminder of the steps to setup static IP address in Ubuntu 14.04

First, edit /etc/network/interfaces

$ sudo vim /etc/network/interfaces

modify it to look like this:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static

then, reload your network:

$sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0

Mounting a Samba share on Ubuntu

Before mounting the shared drive in Linux, make sure you have a mounting point (a directory somewhere). Then issue the command to mount the share:

[~] mkdir myshare
[~] sudo mount -t cifs //backup ~/myshare -o username=USERID,password=PASSWORD

To make this change permanent, you will need to modify your fstab and add a line with the specification of the shared location:

[~] sudo vi /etc/fstab

//backup ~/myshare smbf username=USERID,password=PASSWORD 0 0

Installing drivers to access PostgreSQL and MySql from Python in Ubuntu

To install the drivers for PostgreSQL do the following:

$ sudo apt-get install -y libpq-dev python-dev
$ sudo pip install psycopg2

If you need to install in virtualenv, just run the last command in your environment.

Again, you can always install the packages bundled with Ubuntu but that is not going to work in a clean virtualenv:

$ sudo apt-get install -y python-psycopg2
$ sudo apt-get install -y python-mysqldb

I was checking one of my old emails and I discovered this:

ZeroMQ has been called “sockets on steroids” and it does look like it. It has bindings to a multitude of languages and that will probably makes it really popular.

I’m doing some reading now to see how I can use it in current develoment effors.

Around a year ago I was trying to buy a rack to organize the servers in my basement. A friend of mine mentioned a LackRack. He said I should be able to build one. A quick Google search returned this:

I was looking for something more, let’s just say, mobile. Then I discovered there is already an IKEA Lack table with castors. Here is a link:

This was exactly what I was looking for. I spent last Saturday working at it and here is the result:
